Urgent Appeal for Support: Kantaw Mingalar Monastery School
The Kantaw Mingalar Monastery School is a monastic school providing education from Kindergarten to Grade 5 for more than 150 students in Sagaing City. Since its establishment in 2016, the school has been a lifeline for children from poor families, giving them not only access to basic education but also a safe environment rooted in compassion and community values.
However, the school has long struggled with severe water shortages, as it is located in an area where clean water is scarce. Despite these challenges, the teachers and monks have continued their mission with dedication and perseverance.
On March 28, 2025, tragedy struck when a powerful earthquake hit the region, causing the collapse of two school buildings and severe damage to classrooms. The school’s water well was destroyed, leaving the children and staff without a safe and reliable water source. At present, lessons are being conducted in temporary bamboo-walled classrooms, which are unsafe and unsuitable for long-term use.
To make matters worse, a heartbreaking tragedy occurred shortly after the earthquake: a young novice monk lost his life while attempting to collect logs from the river to help rebuild the school. This loss has deeply affected the entire community and highlights the desperate measures they are forced to take just to keep the school running.
Today, the Kantaw Mingalar Monastery School faces a future filled with uncertainty. Yet, with your support, there is hope. Every donation helps us to rebuild safe classrooms, restore clean water access, and ensure that more than 150 children can continue their education in a secure and nurturing environment.
Together, we can turn this tragedy into an opportunity for renewal, giving the children of Sagaing City the future they deserve.
